On 13th June 2020 our lives took a turn when Hazel was diagnosed with stage 2 cancer of the kidney (Wilms tumour). As a young couple, who had just celebrated the first birthday of our baby, we were broken, and confused. We had never seen or had anyone go through this condition before.
On 4th July 2020, Hazel started her first treatment which was chemotherapy. This treatment took 5 weeks. She was then scheduled for surgery to remove the affected kidney on 13th August 2020. The operation was successful and Hazel was in ICU for four days and was discharged after.
Hazel left the hospital where she was and came to Mulago to continue her treatment from Mulago National Referral Hospital where she completed her 10 rounds of chemotherapy for 10 weeks.
The scans showed she was in remission in march 2021 and she has been doing quite well since, we do follow up scans every after 3 months to check the progress.
Our lives have never been the same because our first love had to go through so much pain. We saw Hazel's hair and nails drop off due to the strong chemo, the excessive vomiting, the midnight wakeups and the huge cancer scare that we have had to go through with her.
We thank God, the medical staff where we went especially Mulago Cancer Institute. Our family and friends during this time.
The experience I went through as a mother left a desire in my heart to help every child, mother and family going through the same.
Every day is a blessing, Every Child with Cancer deserves a chance
